Claude’s memory import moves what you paste: you run Anthropic’s prompt in ChatGPT and paste the list it prints into Claude. Your chats, files and project contents stay in ChatGPT. If you only need your preferences moved once, Claude’s import does that for free.
In Claude, go to Settings > Memory and choose “Start import”.
Paste ChatGPT’s reply and choose “Add to memory”. Claude saves the key points as separate memory entries.
Anthropic’s export prompt
I'm moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you've learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it. Format each entry as: [date saved, if available] - memory content. Make sure to cover all of the following — preserve my words verbatim where possible: Instructions I've given you about how to respond (tone, format, style, 'always do X', 'never do Y'). Personal details: name, location, job, family, interests. Projects, goals, and recurring topics. Tools, languages, and frameworks I use. Preferences and corrections I've made to your behavior. Any other stored context not covered above. Do not summarize, group, or omit any entries. After the code block, confirm whether that is the complete set or if any remain.
Anthropic calls it experimental: Claude “may not always successfully incorporate imported memories”, and it may not keep personal details unrelated to work. Sensitive topics are skipped unless you turn them on. Claude Help Center: memory importClaude Help Center: memory
Afterwards, “See what Claude learned about you” opens a chat that asks Claude what it learned, so you can check. Claude Help Center: memory import
Our guide to Claude memory import has a checklist for marking up the list before you paste it.
What stays in ChatGPT
Your conversations, files and project contents. Anthropic’s article describes no way to import ChatGPT chats, files or projects. Claude Help Center: memory import
Whatever the list leaves out. OpenAI says memory “does not retain every detail from every conversation”, and ChatGPT also draws on past chats, custom instructions, Library files and connected apps. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Later changes. What ChatGPT takes from your chat history can change over time, so the list is a snapshot of one moment. OpenAI Help Center: memory
In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data controls > Export data, choose Export, then Confirm export. The ZIP file includes your chat history and other account data. OpenAI Help Center: export
“Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive”, and the download link expires 24 hours after you get it. An export can’t bring back chats you have already deleted. OpenAI Help Center: export
Export is available on Free, Go, Plus and Pro and in eligible Edu workspaces, but not on Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare. OpenAI Help Center: export
If moving your preferences once is enough, use Claude’s import and skip Dray. Dray is for keeping your old chats searchable, or for using both assistants.
Dray doesn’t sync the two assistants’ own memories. It keeps one memory of your chats that both can search: Dray for Chrome saves new chats from chatgpt.com and claude.ai, and each assistant connected to Dray can look things up there. Dray field guideDray help
You can import your ChatGPT export into Dray from your dashboard. Your browser reads the file and sends Dray the text of your chats and the names of attached files, never the files themselves. Dray privacy policy
To pick up one conversation in Claude, open it in ChatGPT and choose “Ask Claude about this chat” from the Dray menu. Claude opens with the request typed and reads the whole chat through Dray; you press Send yourself. It works for chats Dray has saved. Dray helpDray field guide
A long history takes time to learn on a small plan. Pro learns from 1,000 of your messages a month, plus 1,000 free in your first 30 days, so 12,000 messages take about 11 months. On Max 5x they take about 2 months, and on Max 20x about 1. Dray: usage
