“Memory full” means ChatGPT’s saved memories have reached their capacity, and OpenAI doesn’t say how many that is. Since October 2025, ChatGPT has managed them automatically to help avoid it, starting with Plus and Pro. You can still review, delete and reprioritize them.
OpenAI ties it to saved memories reaching capacity. Its release note of 15 October 2025 says ChatGPT “now manages saved memories automatically”, keeping the most relevant details near the top, to help “prevent saved memories from reaching capacity” and “avoid ‘memory full’ state”. ChatGPT release notes
To decide what stays near the top, ChatGPT “considers factors such as how recent a detail is and how often you talk about a topic”. That note says the change rolled out first to Plus and Pro users worldwide, on the web. ChatGPT release notes
On 4 June 2026, OpenAI gave Plus and Pro “twice as much memory capacity”. ChatGPT release notes
OpenAI gives no number. None of the OpenAI pages we checked states a capacity for saved memories, and the current Memory in ChatGPT article doesn’t use the words “memory full”. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Chat history is a separate layer: “There is no separate storage limit for what ChatGPT can reference through chat history.” OpenAI Help Center: memory
By plan, the pricing page lists Free with “Limited memory and context”, Go with “Longer memory”, Plus with “Expanded memory and context” and Pro with “Maximum memory and context”. ChatGPT pricing
What you can do in ChatGPT
Delete saved memories you no longer need, in Memory settings or by asking ChatGPT to forget them. A deleted memory isn’t used again, but mentions of it stay in your past chats. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Where your plan has them, use search, sorting by newest or oldest, automatic prioritization and version history. You can raise or lower a memory’s priority yourself, restore an earlier version, or turn automatic management off. ChatGPT release notesOpenAI Help Center: memory
Pick the memory experience at Settings > Personalization > Memory: “Saved memories” keeps the list, and “Try improved memory” keeps a broader summary. Changing it doesn’t delete your chat history. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Leave Reference chat history on, since it has no separate storage limit. If your settings include Reference saved memories, turning that off also turns off Reference chat history. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Move standing rules to custom instructions, which OpenAI treats as direct guidance you give, apart from memory. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Move one project’s material into a ChatGPT project with its own files and instructions, and choose project-only memory if it should stay there. OpenAI Help Center: projects
Deleting chats won’t make room: “Deleting the original chat does not automatically delete a separate saved memory.” OpenAI may also keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days. OpenAI Help Center: memory
Where Dray fits
Dray doesn’t touch ChatGPT’s saved memories, so it can’t clear “memory full”. Dray privacy policy
Dray keeps the chats themselves, in your own Dray account, where Claude, Grok and your coding agents can search them. On a paid ChatGPT plan, ChatGPT can search them too. Dray help
Dray has limits of its own: it learns from 1,000, 5,000 or 20,000 of your messages a month, depending on your plan. Going over deletes nothing; new messages wait until the month resets or you move up. Dray: usage
